I am from the Hudson Valley and was raised in a small town that is not very diverse. Growing up as someone who is Hispanic, I remember that my facial features were always something I hated because I didn’t look like anyone I knew. In my lifetime, I have attended two predominantly white institutions, which have made me even more aware of why I still struggle with self-hatred about my appearance. “Culture Vulture” is a painting that represents these feelings through my usual subject of animals. The turkey vultures in my work represent my identity of being half white, and my nostalgia from childhood as an American, while the Andean condor represents my Ecuadorian heritage. Both of them, as well as imagery from my childhood home and town, illustrate the complexity of a part of my identity I have only started to explore as I grow up.
